FESTIVE FRIVOLITIES & DIVERTISEMENTS

A tradition, which is fast becoming an essential part of Christmas in Thanet, is the Sarah Thorne Festive Production. This year we are pulling out all the stops and have for your delectation and delight: FESTIVE FRIVOLITIES AND DIVERTISEMENTS. This will be a chance to envelope yourself in the glory of Christmases past, with a return to the elegance and refinement of the supper club!

Once inside the Memorial Theatre you will be transported back in time: hat check girls to take your coats, table seating with mince pies and nibbles, mulled wine served at the bar, plus of course cigarette girls selling confectionery at your table. A world of courtesy, elegance and rollicking good fun.

Entertainment will be provided by the cream of Thanet Artists, performing comedy sketches, magic and songs. Eminent local artists performing will include Miss. Lisa Payne, Mr. Steven Todd and Mr. Bill Harris recreating their Jeeves and Wooster roles, magic and prestidigitation provided by Alan Wright with support acts by Gordon Eyles, Leah Lawry-Johns, Andrew Nolan, Charle Evans and pianist Wilmot O’Higgins. Your compere will be the vivacious local authoress Jane Wenham-Jones.

This is something a little different to the traditional pantomime that the whole family from grandparents to grandchildren will enjoy. We are encouraging the audience to dress up in any style from a bygone era and we will be awarding a nightly prize to the best dressed!

We will also be holding a nightly raffle to promote and support a deserving local charity. These will be, on the 28th Thanet Owls, on the 29th Leukaemia Research, on the 30th Thanet Hospice and on the 31st The Animal Sanctuary.

Seating will be limited so advance booking is very advisable; this is one Christmas treat you don’t want to miss!

Performances will be nightly at 6.30pm on December 28th, 29th & 30th, with a special New Years Eve Matinee at 2.30pm Members tickets are £9 adult, £7 children and a family ticket at £28. Non-members tickets are £10 adults, £8 children and a family ticket at £32. Seats are bookable in advance from the theatre Box Office on 0845 2626263. New Screening Shows 80 Years Of Thanet On Film

A film screening in Broadstairs on Sunday November 8th offers a unique view of the changing face of Thanet from the 1920s to the present day.

The film includes rare and unusual footage of the isle, including a Zeppelin airship over Thanet, Broadstairs’ legendary seaside entertainer Uncle Mac dancing, Margate ’s Dreamland funfair in its heyday.

But the film also covers the more controversial side of life in Thanet including nazis marching in Margate , battles over Westwood Cross, overbuilding, Thanet Earth and the China Gateway project.

The compilation has been put together by Broadstairs-based film-maker Christine Tongue. Christine said: 'This footage offers a powerful insight into the history of this area. It shows how it has changed from what was once a seaside holiday paradise to what we see today. People will watch these films with a range of emotions – nostalgia, surprise, shock and anger.'

Christine said that one of her intentions in putting the film together was to help inspire people to see a way forward for the isle. 'People talk about trying to regenerate Thanet, but we can only really do that if we understand something of the area’s past. I think these films help do just that.'

The screening is being held under the auspices of the Thanet Film Society and will be followed by a discussion. Entry £5 for non-members, £4 for members. It takes place at 5pm on Sunday November 8 at the Palace Cinema, Harbour St, Broadstairs. Tel 01843 865726.

Fairport Convention@Theatre Royal 30/1/10

Fiona Sherriff, proprietor of the Margate Harbour Arm, is putting on those lovely old folkers Fairport Convention at the Theatre Royal Margate next January. They were a big draw when they played at Margate's Westcoast Bar in May, and Fiona says she is also working on getting a 'special act' to support them. The gig is on 30 January, and tickets are available from the box office on 0845 130 1786.

Burlesque Fundraiser in Broadstairs

This is your chance to get in touch with your inner burlesque queen at Miss Maybe’s workshop on Sunday 25th October in Broadstairs.

Burlesque performer Miss Maybe promises to teach her students moves that will increase their confidence and inspire them to “unleash their inner minx”.

Miss Maybe is herself fascinated in the burlesque arts but also believes it has an appeal to women of all ages, shapes and sizes.

She said: “Burlesque celebrates every shape and size. There is no ideal shape. It celebrates who you are. I’ve been amazed at the confidence and feeling of elation just learning a few simple moves can give you.”

Miss Maybe added: “You don’t need any dance experience – and there’s no nudity involved! But there’ll be plenty of fun and giggles!”

There are three classes, one at 11am-12.30 for women over 50 or those have illness or surgery, the others at 1pm –2.30 and 2.30- 4pm open to all.

The burlesque class is a breast cancer fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Care charity.

Miss Maybe said: “Breast cancer is a cause close to my heart – my mum went through the treatment five years ago -- so I want to help in any way I can to both help raise funds for the cause and hopefully encourage women who have been through the illness to feel good about themselves.”

“No one should feel inhibited about coming, whatever age. My oldest lady has been 74. Wear whatever makes you feel good – sequins, boas, whatever.”

There will be afternoon tea and a raffle.

The workshop will be held in the Red Hall, 11 Grosvenor Road , Broadstairs, on October 25th, 11-12.30 and 1pm to 2.30pm and 2.30 to 4pm.
